The 2013 Berkshire 17U Red Sox Jr. Showcase Team would be comprised of returning juniors Aaron Gentry and Zach Sermarini and sophomores Connor Nazaryk, Owen Bates, Nate Griesbaum, and Dante Salerno and juniors David Kyslinger, Matt Byrd, Nate Baxter, Coley Parker, Jared Adam, Frankie Talarico and Eric Schmidley and lone senior Coy Heaps. The team would split their schedule playing some 16U tournaments and also in the 18U bracket when the Berkshire 18U Showcase team would be traveling.

Through the first four weekends of the season, the team struggled to find any consistency. The pitchers struggled collectively with their control as the staff averaged six walks per game. The team would compile a 7-10 record through this period. Finally, a brief rest was what the team seemed to need, and after the Labor Day Tournament, the team settled in and started playing some winning baseball. The pitchers settled down and found their groove and the team showed a never quit attitude as they compiled an 18-11 record the rest of the way.

Along the way, the team would capture back to back tournament championships in the Mad Dog Wood Bat Fall Classic and the Kinteco Autumn Harvest. Aaron Gentry would throw complete games in both championship games.

Offensively, the team was led by Gentry (.484, 44H, 16 2B), Salerno (.354, 35H, 36R), Griesbaum (.316, 25H), Kyslinger (.310, 26H), Byrd (.305, 36H) and Baxter (.291, 32H, 18RBI).The pitching staff was led by Gentry (3-1-3, 0.98 ERA), Nazaryk (.191 ERA in relief), Byrd (6-4, 2.59 ERA), Baxter (6-5, 2.73 ERA, 73K’s) and Parker (6-4, 3.50 ERA, 49K’s). Defensively, several players contributed greatly by spending much time at positions other than their primary position. Catchers Owen Bates (3B), Jared Adam and David Kyslinger (outfield), Zach Sermarini (2B) and infielder Aaron Gentry (RF).

Closing out the season, the Pink Ribbon Classic would be postponed by rain to the final weekend and Coach Kramer implored the team to finish the season strong and make it one to remember. The team would win its pool games and its semi final and found itself in an all Berkshire championship game against the Berkshire Spinners. The teams traded leads until the top of the seventh when the Spinners took a 5-4 lead. When Dante Salerno grounded out to lead off the bottom of the seventh for the Sox, things didn’t look so good. But, in their play to the final out style, the Sox celebrated as Zach Sermarini drove in David Kyslinger with the winning run with two outs with a solid single to left. All that was left was the dogpile celebration in the infield. A fitting close to a great season.
