The Berkshire 28-Over Red Sox began its 2009 season hoping to rebound from a disappointing 2008 season – its first losing season since manager Kevin Kantner took over the helm in 2003. It was just one season removed from the 2007 Berks County Senior Baseball League’s (BCSBL) Regular Season Championship title success.

With several changes to the roster from ‘08, Kantner was hopeful that the pieces of the puzzle would all come together. However, some major previous contributors were missing in action, including former 2006 & 2008 Pitcher of the Year/MVP Mike Strechay and long-time veteran Bobby Rhoads. 2006-07 Team MVP Scott Emerich was injured and unable to play during the season. New team members Tom Krick, Elvis West, Sean Gaston, Scott Barrell & Terry Koch were added to strengthen the roster, and they played important roles as rookies.

Eventually, the same problems that befell the team in 2008 cropped up again, and the previous team strengths of solid pitching and potent offense materialized only here and there, and the team struggled with inconsistency for most of the season.

Offensively the team was lead by co-MVP’s Troy Gaston and John Guiseppe, along with Krick, Shawn Seidel, Brad Burg, Anthony Cinfici, Barry Carl & Kantner. Returning players were Keith Kelly, Bud Dietrich, Randy Strausser, Steve Diaz, & Bill Fox. After some additional injuries, veteran Todd Schlegel was also coaxed out of retirement for the last 1/3 of the season. Defensive stars were Troy Gaston, Guiseppe, Cinfici & Krick.

The season started very promising with an opening day double-header sweep of the A’s, and another two-game sweep in week two vs. the Orioles. After starting 4-0, the Sox went 3-3 in its next six games, still holding a respectable 7-3 record. Then the bottom fell out, losing its next six in a row falling below .500 with a 7-9 record. It rallied in its final double-header vs. Hamburg with a sweep to even its record at 9-9 heading into the BCSBL playoffs as the number seven seed.

Unlike 2008 when the elder Sox entered the playoffs as the number eight seed and promptly shocked and defeated the number one seed in the first round, this year turned out to be quite different. Facing the number two seed Hamburg Astros – whom it had beaten twice the week before – the Sox came out flat and made several crucial errors that lead to a 6-2 defeat. Bounced into the losers bracket, it was ousted from the playoffs with a 10-3 loss to Reamstown in its next game.

With a 9-11 final league record, the team did not nearly achieve what it had in mind coming into 2009, and it are already started preparing for a much better season in 2010. The same goal remains as always – winning the BCSBL Championship.
