Record: 7-15-1
Manager: Kevin Kantner

MVP: Mike Strechay
Sportsmanship/Hustle: Bud Dietrich
Outstanding Pitcher: Mike Strechay
Defensive Player of the Year: Troy Gaston

The Berkshire 28-Over Red Sox began their 2008 season with the same hope and desire to pick-up just where they left off in 2007. Last season, the team captured the BERKS COUNTY SENIOR BASEBALL LEAGUE’s (BCSBL) Regular Season Championship title and trophy by finishing 17-3. They reached the Championship Round of the playoffs, eventually losing to two-time league champion Sam’s Goosehouse Mets 8-3.

With all but three players returning from that ‘07 roster, and the return of 2006 team and league Pitcher of the Year Mike Strechay, manager Kevin Kantner felt confident to make yet another championship run. New team members Bill Fox, Chad Labour, Anthony Cinfici & John Guiseppe were added to strengthen an already solid roster and received plenty of playing time.

But what had powered the Sox to a 95-35 record in Kantner’s five previous seasons at the helm, solid pitching and great offense (averaged 8-9 runs per game over those 5 seasons) never materialized, and the team could never put any kind of winning streaks together. It began with an opening day double-header sweep by the A’s, and the Sox stumbled to a 1-5 start. Their offensive struggles continued most of the season, only averaging 3.7 runs per game. Without 2006 & 2007 MVP Scott Emerich, and 2005 & 2007 Pitcher of the Year Shawn Seidel, who were both injured early in the season and unavailable for most of it, the offense and pitching struggled other than Mike Strechay’s 4 wins. The offense was lead by most of the season by Troy Gaston, Steve Diaz and Brad Burg, with help from John Guiseppe (before his season-ending injury), and Kantner.

Other key contributors during the year were Keith Kelly, Bud Dietrich, Barry Carl and Bobby Rhoads.

The Sox finished the regular season at 6-13-1, and ended up as the 8th seed in the BCSBL playoffs. However one final hurrah was in store, as the Sox were matched in the first round with the #1 seeded Sam’s Goosehouse Mets, who had also swept them in two close games during the regular season. In a rare déjà vu moment from 2007, the Sox came to life in that game, getting a great pitching performance by Strechay, along with a 10-run explosion lead by Anthony Cinfici, which resulted in a 10-2 victory and the first time a #8 seed had upset a #1 seed in BCSBL history. That momentum however was short-lived, and the following day, in the winner’s bracket quarterfinals, they wasted a 3-hitter pitched by Randy Strausser, and lost to the #4 seeded Phillies 2-0. Their season ended with a 16-1 beating by those same Sam’s Goosehouse Mets, who exacted their revenge for the first round upset, and they eventually advanced and won the league championship yet again.

A 7-15-1 final record was not nearly what the team had in mind coming into 2008, and they are already preparing for a much better season outlook for 2009. Same goal as always – the BCSBL Championship.
